"Noteworthy"   -   Helpful Hints

Starting a Song File

Open Noteworthy and click on File, New.  Click on Barbershop Template.  Enter the Song Title and other information and click OK.  Immediately click Save As.  In the Save In window, go to My Documents/My Music folder.  At the bottom under File name, enter the name of the song and click on Save.

At this point you can now start to enter your song on the black page.

Note that the screen shows two staves; treble and base.  Using the Page Up/Page Down keys, you will see that the two staves consist of four staffs, which appear as blue when highlighted.  If you click on View at the top, and click on Allow Layering, the staves will be broken out into the four separate staffs; two treble and two bass.  You can enter notes in this mode or in the combined two-stave mode.  If you enter notes using the layered mode, when you’re finished, you click on View/Allow Layering to see the finished product.  You will now probably see that some notes are touching each other and some sharps and flats need to be separated.  More on this later.

You can see your finished product any time by clicking on File, Print Preview.

The Barbershop Template is located in Local Disk (C)/Program Files/Noteworthy Composer/templates.  This template transposes tenor and lead notes 12 steps down to agree with the bari and bass range.  Volumes are set at maximum 127.  In practice, you will lower the volumes of tenor, bari, and bass to balance the sound.  The Instrument is set at Acoustic Piano, but there are hundreds of sounds to pick from.

Clef, Time signature and Key Signature

The clefs are already entered for you in the template.  In the layered mode (four staff view), note that there are two treble clefs and two bass clefs.  The clef, time, and key signatures must be entered in all staffs.

To enter the Key, Page Up to the tenor staff and click on the Key Signature Icon (4th from left on third row of icons at top) and choose the key.  Do the same for the lead, bari and bass staffs.

Next, enter the Time signature using the appropriate icon.

Note Entry

There are two ways to enter notes.  First you choose the stem direction using the last two icons on the 2nd row and place the blinking curser at the point where the note should go.   Then you can click on the whole, half, quarter, etc icons or press 1, 2, 3 etc. to activate the icon.  Then you press Enter. If you want a sharp, flat, or natural note, you click on one of those icons before pressing Enter.

To move to the next measure, press Tab.

 Special Trick

In order to maintain the integrity of the note values in each measure, you can create a fifth staff and enter whole notes in each measure.   As you enter your actual notes in each measure in the other staffs and press Tab to move to the next measure, the measure bars should line up with the whole note measure bars.  If not, you have a problem with timing.

To add a staff, press Staff, New Staff and enter a clef, key and timing signature.  Then press 1 (for whole note) and repeat Enter, Tab, Enter until you have a series of measures.

You delete this extra staff before finalizing your work.

 Rest Entries and Adjustments

Rests are entered the same as notes but instead of pressing Enter, you press the Space Bar.  For example, to enter a Quarter note rest, put the blinking curser where you want the rest, press 3 to highlight the quarter note, and press the Space Bar.

Many times, rests must be raised so they don’t touch another note in the measure.  To do this, you put the curser immediately in front of the rest, press Shift/Right Arrow to block the rest, then press Alt/Enter and then change the Vertical Offset.

Bar Lines

Use the Tab key to enter a regular bar line.  For other bar lines, click on Insert/Bar Line, and choose the one you want.

Measure Numbers

Select File/Page Setup/Options, and select one of the Measures options, then OK.

  Dotted Notes

Press the Period key or the dotted note icon at the top after you have selected the note value you want.

Beam

To connect two eighth notes with a beam, put the curser in front of the first eighth not, press Shift/Arrow Right to block both notes, and then click on the Beam icon.

Triplets

Block all three notes and click on the Triplets icon.

Copying and Pasting

You can copy note runs from one place to another simply by blocking the notes to copy and selecting the Copy/Paste icons.

Correcting a Note

To move a note, you must remove the wrong note and enter the note on the correct line.  Put the curser after the note, press the Back Space key, and then arrow up or down to the correct spot, choose the note value and press enter.

If a note needs to be flatted, sharped, or dotted, just block the note and click on the appropriate icon to flat, sharp or dot the note.

 Playing the Song

You can play the song any time.  Put the curser at the beginning of the song or in front of the measure you want to play and press F5 to start and F6 to stop or click on the Start/Stop icons.

To hear only one part, mute the other three.  Page Up or Down to highlight a staff.  Then press Staff, Mute to mute that staff.  Do the same for the others you don’t want to hear.

 Lyrics

Lyrics are usually entered for the lead notes.  However, sometimes there are lyrics for tenor, bari, and bass notes as well.

To enter lyrics for your lead staff, page up or down until the staff is blue.  Then press L for Lyrics.  Delete the lyrics in the template.  Click on Configuration and choose 1 lyric line.  Then click on Lyric 1.

Enter your text.  Use the dash to break out words to separate syllables (Jin-gle).  Use the Underline Key (_) to put space between lyrics if you have notes you don’t want lyrics assigned to.

 Last Additions (Text Entries)

Sometimes you want to insert words on the score such as Lively, or Refrain.  Place the curser where you want the text, select Insert/Text and enter the test you want.

 Slurs

Slurs connect two or more notes on different lines.  Place the curser in front of the first note and press Shift and right arrow to block all notes except the last one to be connected.  Click on the Slur Icon.  The slur will probably be in the wrong direction.  To change the direction of the slur, while the notes are still blocked, press Alt/Enter and click on Slur direction.

 Ties

Ties connect two notes on the same line.  Place the curser in front of the first note and block only that note.  Press the Tie icon.  Again, you will have to change the direction of the tie.

Sometimes it is easier to leave all ties and slurs as they first appear and change the direction of them when you are finished the entire song.  To do so, put the curser at the beginning of the song and press Shift/End.  Then press Alt/Enter and change the direction of both slurs and ties at the same time.

 Tempo

If you want to hear the piece at a slower speed, put the curser at the beginning of the song just above the tenor staff (be sure the lead line is blue).  Press Insert/Tempo and lower the value for the quarter note.

 Completing the Score

You can change the song title, add arranger, author, and copyright information before you print the song.  Press File/Info and enter your information.

 Page Setup

You can change the margins and other parameters of the page before printing by going to File/Page Setup.

 Listening to the Score

If you want to hear only two the lead and tenor parts, you can mute the bari and bass by highlighting the staff you want to mute and clicking on Staff/Staff Mute.

 Positioning Information on Staffs

Sometimes lyrics overlap notes, notes overlap each other, and accidentals overlap each other.  Use the Staff/Staff Properties to rearrange the size of staffs to accommodate lyrics.

To put space between notes when for instance the tenor and lead notes are overlapping, or space the accidentals, put the curser in front of one of the notes, press Shift/Right Arrow to block the notes, and press Alt/Enter and increase the spacing.

 Go to Measure 34

If you have numbered measures, you can quickly go to a measure by pressing CTRL G and entering the measure number.

 Repeats

Noteworthy supports repeats but this subject is complicated.  Go to the help key or call someone.
