Who We Are The Culpeper Minutemen Chorus is the performing chorus of the Culpeper, Virginia Chapter of SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America) also known as the Barbershop Harmony Society. SPEBSQSA (Barbershop Harmony Society) was founded in 1938 with the express purpose of preserving a traditional form of uniquely American a capella vocal music, the Barbershop Quartet, and spreading the appreciation of this form of music and music in general to a wide public audience. The Barbershop Harmony Society is the largest male vocal society in the world with over 750 chapters worldwide and over 35,000 active members. The Society’s goal and mission is to “Keep America Singing” by encouraging participatory vocal music in our communities and local schools. It is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit musical service organization with outreach performances to veterans, the elderly, the infirm, and anyone in need of a little music to lift their spirits with its wholesome positive and often patriotic themes. Our repertoire includes inspirational and patriotic music, songs from the theatre and cinema, as well as all time favorites from the past and present. The Culpeper Barbershop Harmony Chorus, founded in 2008, is already becoming an integral part of the Culpeper community. The Culpeper Chapter follows the Barbershop Harmony Society’s vision and goals while receiving organizational, educational, and promotional guidance from our parent organization. Our Chapter’s vision is as “A fellowship of men devoted to the art of a cappella barbershop singing, committed to excellence in musical performance and good will in the community”. Our Chapter specific mission includes 1) To create a rewarding experience for our members and audience 2) To attract new members to improve the vitality and quality of performance 3) To master the art form 4) To serve the community 5) To
preserve the four-part barbershop harmony art form.
