October '97

Welcome to Fall as we welcome everyone back from Summer holidays and absences. We hope everyone had a restive summer, and is back now and ready to take on new musical and administrative challenges. Elsewhere in this bulletin you'll be able to read about the results of our chorus visioning exercises, and the commitments we're undertaking on behalf of the good of the chapter. It’s perhaps an overworn cliché, but you get out of anything according to what you put into it -- and your Barbershop Chapter and Chorus are no different. If you want to have a better chorus, or to have more fun, or to do more quartetting, or have more sing-outs … the place to start is with our ourselves. So, don't just make a commitment to the chapter, make a commitment to yourself as well - to become more involved, to practice more, to sing better, to have more fun. You'll be amazed at the results (and Ken won't know what hit him).

Bulletins will be published monthly (well sort-of) for distribution at the first (or second, or maybe third or...) meeting of each month (except July and August). Deadline for material to be included will normally be the last Monday before publication (unless advertised otherwise). When you’re done reading this bulletin, recycle it -- pass it along.

Thanksgiving Holiday, Monday, October 13th

NO REGULAR MEETING

Enjoy your reprise, study your music and see you back on Monday October 20th

Ah! on Thanksgiving day, when from East and from West,
From North and from South, come the pilgrim and guest,
When the gray-haired New Englander sees round his board
The old broken links of affection restored,
When the care-wearied man seeks his mother once more,
And the worn matron smiles where the girl smiled before.
What moistens the lip and what brightens the eye?
What calls back the past, like the rich Pumpkin pie?

Former Member Still At Large - Hello Golden Harvest

To all the members I've never met,

You're some of them.

To all the members that I know,

Faces guys, Faces, its our big show.

To all the Guests who came here to sing,

We need your voice to make them ring.

Just thought I'd drop a line to tell you all I miss you. I'm currently calling Pennsylvania my home, but will return to Canada for the Christmas holidays. I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to visit with you all once again, but when I do you'll see the REAL "PRAIRIE BLEND"

Your friend in Harmony,

Tom Harris

P.S. Would love to hear from you, drop an E-mail ANYBODY.

[If anyone has a message or greeting for Tom, I'd be happy to pass it along to him…

Things move fast on the internet -- I sent Tom a short reply and received this… Bruce]]

Hi Bruce,

Tom Harris here, it was really great that you responded to my short note so quickly.

As a former member (Wheatland Chorus at the time) it meant a lot to hear some updating on activities of the Golden Harvest Chorus. Just a little background so you can get an idea of where I'm coming from, I was a member from 1989 to 1991 at which time I moved to BC. I also used to visit Regina at least once a year and in fact sang with the UNSUNG HEROES on one of your shows in, I believe, 1978. Check the date with Dave Slinn (my best friend). I've also been to Gord & Marg Gardiner's steak fry (about 5 times I believe) as well as the usual, worked the bingos, attended all the sing outs, did the SP for the chorus for a couple of years etc. etc. To many stories, so little time. Anyway any of the lads that remember me can give you their own version, and it will probably be true.

I had a chance to view the Web Page and pull down issue 7 of the Sharp Notes. What a great way to catch up on the news. As you may know by now I sang with the Prairie Blend with Dave Slinn, Murray La Salle and Bill Coulthard. I noticed Dave and Murray are not active lately as well as guys like Don Gardiner, Gary Proctor etc, etc. as noted in your bulletin. Maybe a special night like "We Wanna Sing Some Oldies With You" could conjure up some interest, who knows, but try and make sure "Quartet Singing" is the theme, it could have some good results. Only a thought.

I remember when I was around TENORS were in short supply, but according to your roster that doesn't seem to be a problem. Anyway before I forget tell Bill Coulthard to drop me a line, or anybody else as I would love to hear from them.

By the way, any chance of getting those 2 learning tapes for most of your repertoire? Let me know and I'll give you my address and forward the money. By the way, do you still afterglow after the meetings?

I have a zillion things I'd love to talk about, but I'll save them for my next E-mail. Keep in touch and I hope you don't mind my ramblings. Thanks again Bruce for keeping in touch.

Yours in Harmony,
Tom Harris

Reflections on the now Defunct Award of Harmony - Jack Boan

It is many years since the award of harmony was introduced. If I'm not mistaken, it was in the days when we met at Wascana United Church, under Tom Magnuson's leadership, and we had around 85 members! Why it was dropped is lost on me. I was the Chairman of the Selection Committee, and all I know is one day I woke up and I had no job. No reason was given that I can remember.

All that aside, it was a good project. Doug Lee, formerly of CKTV, was an early recipient of the award; later, Anne Luke followed. There were several others, one per year, but I have mislaid the records.

All recipients won the award because of their contribution to introducing social harmony in the community. Anne's award was for the harmony created through her inspiration and industry in establishing the Early Learning Centre.

Whenever a program comes along like The Regina Early Learning Centre, or "Head Start" (in the United States), questions are raised as to whether it does any lasting good. Supporters claim that for every dollar invested, the community gets from $6 to $10 back. The basis for this estimate is money not needed for jails, parole officers, welfare payments, medical and hospital bills, and so on, as well as the positive contribution made by citizens who are productive rather than being a liability. Probably, if anythi
