Six hints for pleasing guests

From the Danbury, Conn., Chapter, Hatter Chatter, Bob Bartley, EDITOR

(This October 1971 Hatter Chatter item was written by Raleigh Block, a member who a year earlier had been one of our guests. It's just as valid today.)

At our last guest night we had some great guests and great singers but somehow we only signed two members.

Maybe we should look at ourselves and see what we could do better, to make our guests feel more welcome and a part of our group. Here are a few things to consider.

  1. The guest, although he may like singing, will most likely be hesitant unless he gets encouragement from YOU.

  2. In addition to wanting to sing, the guests want to feel accepted. Go introduce yourself! Find out a little about him and introduce him to other chapter members.

  3. The guest is not familiar with our songs. Be patient with the review of old or simple songs. Let's be considerate of our guests, give them an opportunity to gain confidence.

  4. Most of our guests are brought in by members. Let's show these members we appreciate their efforts. Congratulate a member for his bringing a guest. This not only makes the members feel good, but the guests, too.

  5. The guest is how we grow - don't forget him for a minute. Get him to participate. After the meetings we usually get into cliques and forget about our guests. Get our guests involved, teach a tag to them. Don't forget our guests for one minute.

  6. How do we get guests back? Invite them back - PERSONALLY. Make arrangements to pick them up for the next meeting.
